I was a Telecommunications Technician in REME from 1987-1998, mostly doing Clansman repair when we weren’t galavanting off playing little boy soldiers…
A few years ago I joined the local Army cadets as an instructor and re-kindled my interest in radios, got carried away at some auctions and bought far too much kit for my wife’s liking…
I took my foundation exam in November 2011 (M6FYI), did my intermediate exam (a surface mounted SDR receiver project) in March 2012 (2E0ERV) and passed my advanced in July 2012 (M0SLK). Thanks to the guys at Andover radio Club for all their help along the way!
Unfortunately I have managed to spend very little time on air lately due to many other priorities, although I do spend some time with the Gozo Radio Club as 9H4SS on Lighthouse day in the summer catching some sun and trying to make contacts, despite the incredibly bad interference from the lighthouse itself!
Nowadays, my main interest in radio is working out how to modify the equipment to make it more user friendly in the modern day – keep an eye out for new mods in the modifications section of this website..

This section of the website is for all you would be REME Tels Techs that need to get the guts out and make some repairs to some sick radios. I will be adding to this whenever I get the time – I have tons of 20 yr old hand written (and drawn) repair notes that i will convert to pdf so everyone can get in there and keep all this gear on the road. By all means drop me a line if you have any faults and if I’ve seen it before I’ll help if I can!
And if you manage to fix a fault, please drop me a line and I’ll add the “fix”
This section of the website is to give short and jargon free instructions in the use of the Clansman range of radios.. Not just a cut and paste of the standard operating manuals, I’ve tried to put together instructions as relevant as possible to the way we use these in our hobby…
Some of the radios/equipment can be improved for use within the amateur environment and/or as original spare parts become less available.
I have included some of the mods below in the form of modification instructions that you can download and try yourself. I can accept no responsibility if a mod goes wrong, this is entirely at your own risk and should only be attempted if you are confident in your own ability!
I can supply Mod Kits for you to do the modifications or you can source all the items yourself. Not included with the kits are tools and consumables such as tape and insulation sleeving. If you can’t do the mod yourself, I can do the work for you, but please be aware it may take a while for me to get round to do it as I am a very busy boy!
